Safety

At MA Long Construction, Inc. our number one priority every day is to ensure that our employees return home safely to their families each night. We take the safety of our workers and your job site extremely seriously and believe that all accidents are preventable.

To adhere to this, our strong safety culture includes a formalized system of training, inspections, audits, and reporting. We train our managers, supervisors, and employees to identify and correct unsafe conditions and — more importantly — unsafe work practices, immediately. We continually make every effort to improve our performance and are proud to have one of the best safety records in our industry.

We consider safety to be much more than adhering to regulations or filing insurance claims. We believe good safety practices improve employee wellness, strengthen communication, streamline construction processes, and build a culture that contributes to your project’s success.

Here are just a few of the strategies we use to maintain our superior track record.

We perform extensive site visits and plan reviews to identify as many safety challenges as possible long before the first shovel breaks ground. Safety is also one of the primary considerations we take into account when making value engineering suggestions.

Team member certifications

State and federal regulations require a certain percentage of all site workers to be certified in first aid, CPR, and other requirements. That’s not good enough for us. We require this training for every single member of our team.

Start at the top

Safety on the job site starts in the owner suite, establishing it as a core value of our organization. From the owner of M.A. Long Construction, Inc., on down, safety training and implementation of safety on each project is our highest priority.

Recognize success, but hold everyone accountable

Accountability is a core component of our safety culture. From individual workers to foremen, project supervisors and executives, everyone is held accountable for safety on all of our projects.

Because every project is built on paper first, safety begins with pre-planning. The means and methods we use to build each project are identified, along with the exposures encountered and control measures we put in place ahead of time to protect all of our workers.

Evaluate each project phase for safety

Planning for safety is an ongoing process. As a project progresses, a job safety task analysis is performed to make sure that the appropriate work and safety equipment is on hand so that our workers aren’t tempted to make do with inadequate equipment or take unnecessary chances that could endanger their safety.

Train workers for safety

Safety isn’t simply common sense. Workers are trained to properly use a variety of safety equipment in diverse situations, including excavations, trenches, and confined spaces. From hand-held tools to heavy equipment, each of our workers shows up on the job site knowing safe practices and appropriate regulations.

Review accidents and near misses

We start with the mindset that accidents are not inevitable. In the event that there is an accident, the facts and circumstances are reviewed to identify root causes so that corrective action can be taken to prevent future incidents.

We are a proactive company that takes a collaborative approach with safety professionals and risk management experts at every step of the project. We look to our safety consultant and insurer as resources with substantive expertise in risk management, safety engineering and systems.

Make safety an everyday topic

Weekly toolbox safety talks are a common way we remind workers about safety procedures and address concerns, but safety is an everyday topic. When our foremen gather workers at the beginning of a shift we talk about the day’s work, review the hazards involved, implement safety controls, make sure workers have the right protective gear, and address all safety concerns.

Working toward zero injuries — every day

We at M.A. Long Construction, Inc. work every day to build a strong culture of safety. It’s the core value for every employee. A strong safety culture burnishes the company’s reputation — one of the most valuable assets of our business — and plays an essential role in our long-term success.

Proper Gear is a must

Each of our team members is personally responsible for arriving on site with a full complement of company-issued safety gear, including a hard hat, reflective vest, and a filled 2-gallon water jug.
